October 2024

Roy Mills

With great sadness, I pay my respects to Roy Mills who sadly passed away on 14 October 2024. Roy had been my uncle's best friend ever since they met on Gloucester train station as young men. They had both left home to become national servicemen. They trained together, fought together in 2 Platoon, A Company, 1st Battalion, The Gloucestershire Regiment during the Imjin Battle 22 - 25 April 1951, and endured two and a half years together in a POW camp in North Korea. Roy undoubtedly saved my uncle's life by keeping him alive when he became seriously ill during the awful conditions they suffered during the terrible forced march into North Korea, and in the brutal POW camp. They remained best friends throughout the rest of their lives.

While researching my book, Roy provided me with invaluable details about his experience in battle and captivity. His story is told alongside that of my uncle. Thank you for the privilege, Roy.

I will always remember him with great fondness - a great sense of humour which never left him - and always so welcoming when I visited him and Avril in their home. The Forest has lost a beautiful soul. Rest in peace, Roy.

Royal British Legion's Remembrance Service for the 70th Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice: a wonderful memory from summer

On this special day, we remember all those who served and especially those who were injured or lost their lives in conflicts. Unfortunately, this year I was unable to visit Ruardean, my home village, to pay my respects but my heart was there and I could hear the names being read aloud. Always a beautiful service.

I'm adding a memory here from the Royal British Legion's Korean War Remembrance Service which took place at Horse Guards Parade, London, on 27 July this year to mark the 70th Anniversary of the signing of the Korean War Armistice. It was attended by His Excellency Yoon Yeocheol, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the UK, and HRH The Duke of Gloucester. I was honoured to be invited to talk about my uncle and his fellow Glosters' experiences in the POW camps after their capture following the Imjin Battle. It was a wonderful event and a great opportunity to chat up with some of the veterans and their families.
